~ Excerpt ~

When the rain got me, I was still running along an unfamiliar street that seemed endless on both directions. Within seconds, the drizzle became a cold downpour that soaked me to the bone, plastering the thin shirt and jeans onto my body. My hair was sticking on my face, pricking my eyes like dozens of needles, but I didn’t stop. Lost in a haze of despair, I could not comprehend the faint voice in my head that warned me to go back. I kept running away. Where I was heading, I could not tell anymore. Everything around me seemed strange and obscure; no houses, no shelter, only the perennial olive trees and the murky veil of rain. For the last two years in my life, every day, every minute, every second had been spinning around one single pivot; that rescue mission had been the only pivot of my new life. It had defined my actions, my thoughts, and my whole existence. I had gone a long way, overcoming any personal limit and fear, transcending time, only because I was fixed on a purpose. I had left my old life behind.
I had a life once.

Now, my mission was my life. A mission that had taken me far away from my family, my friends, my studies and my future. But I did not care anymore. I had chosen my destiny. It had always been about him. Christopher. He had turned his back on me and the pivot support had suddenly vanished. I had nothing to lean on. My whole life was collapsing. I was collapsing. There was no angel coming to my rescue this time.

A sharp pain in my chest blocked my breath, forcing me to stop. But I welcomed the pain, didn’t want it to ease out. Strangely enough, it seemed to be the right thing to feel. This is how some people have died, right? Perhaps this could be the end…

“Hey, you’re standing in the middle of the street!” a voice in my head shouted. “And that yellow light approaching is about to crash into you in minutes. Can’t you hear it? You have to move to the side. Don’t just stand there. It’s a car! It’s definitely a car and the veil of hale certainly does not help. MOVE!”

Then why wasn’t I moving? Could I be waiting for the car to put an end to this excruciating obstacle race I had started?

I closed my eyes and held my breath as the roaring sound of the car approached.

CentreStage with Harvey Black: Cover Reveal for The Red Effect @black_author

Welcome to CentreStage!

CS_Logo

Today, it is my great pleasure to host fellow Loveahapyending.com Lifestyle author, the one and only Harvey Black. Harvey shares with us the cover reveal for his upcoming novel, The Red Effect, and tells us a little about his writing… Take it away, Harvey!

Cover Reveal – The Red Effect

“Today, West German imperialism is United States’ chief ally in Europe in aggravating world tension. West Germany is increasingly becoming the seat of the war danger, where revenge-seeking passions are running high… The policy pursued by the Federal Republic of Germany is being increasingly determined by the same monopolies that brought Hitler to power.

The Rhineland politicians fancy that once they get the atomic bomb, frontier posts will topple and they will be able to achieve their cherished desire of carving up the map of Europe again and taking revenge for defeat in the second world war.

One of the most ominous factors endangering peace is the bilateral military alliance that is taking shape between the ruling circles of the United States and the Federal Republic of Germany. This factor remains an objective of unflagging attention.”

Leonid Brezhnev
23rd Party Congress
March 1966

The Cold War and Nitroglycerin had one thing in common; both were stable when circumstances allowed. But, when something rocks the boat, or events are overtaken by Incidents that get out of control, the status quo is lost. The consequence is an eruption that is both violent and lethal.

The Cold War trilogy will trace the Cold War as it simmers, overheats and eventually turns East against West. The outcome? Start with ‘The Red Effect’ out in April, followed by ‘The Black Effect’ and ‘The Blue Effect’.

And here it is, the star of the day:
The Red Effect

RedEffect72dpi

1983: The Cold War has been in existence since the end of World War Two. Although tensions have always been fraught between the Western nations and the members of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact, common sense prevailed.

Until, as a consequence of the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, the shooting down of a Korean passenger aircraft in 1983, and the relentless build up of Soviet military strength, everything is about to change.

In a panoramic novel, readers travel from centres of power to the front lines – a war is brewing and events are happening at every angle. Is the Cold War about to turn hot? Can NATO forces endure a mass strike by thousands of Soviet tanks? Can the West survive?

Follow the series of gripping events that culminated in ‘The Red Effect’, in the first instalment of Harvey Black’s Cold War trilogy.

The Harvey Black Interview

Cold War 9 Harvey Black 039

Harvey, tell us… What started you writing?

I have wanted to write a novel since I was a teenager. Enthralled by Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, E.E. Doc Smith’s Lensmen series and Edgar Rice Burroughs, I felt sure my first would be of the SF genre.

Joining the army changed all of that and my passion now is for military history.  ‘Devils with Wings’, a military thriller, based around the adventures of two young Fallschirmjäger paratroopers during the early part of World War II, is a fictionalised adventure based on the famous assault on the impregnable Belgian fortress, Eben Emael.

What makes your books so special?

I try to visit the locations in person. For Devils with Wings: Silk Drop, I walked the routes, up to 18 miles, in Crete, during the hottest part of the day, where my characters would have marched. Most of the descriptions in the novel, of what they can see, was written in situ.

I have just finished the first of my Cold War trilogy of novels, The Red Effect. Having spent a number of years in British Army Intelligence during the Cold War years, I have a deep insight into the undercurrents and flashpoints that occurred between the Soviet Union and the West.

What authors inspire you?

I have number of authors I follow, ranging from Stephen Leather, Simon Scarrow, Bernard Corwall, Gerald Seymor to Ian Rankin. Since I have been writing my own novels, I have played a close interest in newer authors, such as S.J.A.Turney and Stephen England. I am currently reading ‘Marias’ Mules’ IV.

Reading as well as writing, you are one busy man. What are your plans going forward?

There will be ten books in the ‘Devils with Wings’ series, Book 4, will be published towards the end of the year. The Red Effect now finished, I will focus on Book 2, The Black Effect, where the confrontation between East and West continues.

Any thoughts on what you might do differently next time?

More structure to my chapters in advance, focus on my characterisation and improving my dialogue, key to keeping the story moving.

Would you share your lessons learnt so far?

Edit, edit, edit! Even when you have your editing done professionally, you still need to check your manuscript again and again.

Wow, thank you for sharing your thoughts on your writing experience, Harvey, it’s been a real pleasure having you on CentreStage today.

Out in April – The Red Effect.

GOOOORGEOUS! Huge congratulations on a mesmerizing and totally intriguing cover, A.L. Awesome! Now let’s hear the blurb…

People come into our lives. Some stay, and many go. Some build us up, while most tear us down. They become our friends, our enemies, our lovers, our tormentors.

Christian Davison came into mine, and I knew I’d never be the same.

To Elizabeth Ayers, New York City had always been a dream. She’s worked her entire young life to make it here.

Groomed to one day take over his father’s law firm, attending Columbia University was Christian Davison’s only option.

Neither wanted anything more until they sat across from each other at a café table after being paired as study partners.

Christian wants her, but Elizabeth knows better than to give into their intense attraction. Yet there is little she can do to stay away.

Lost to You, the prequel to the bestselling romance, Take This Regret. A New Adult novella, recommended for readers 17+. It’s unnecessary to have read Take This Regret to enjoy Lost to You.

And best of all… Lost to You is out in e-book format on 31 January!!! Can’t wait! Congrats again and Rock On!!!

CentreStage proudly presents: COVER REVEAL for Never Alone by Linn B Halton

Welcome to CentreStage!

CentreStage showcases amazingly talented authors from around the world. These authors might share with you their inspiration for writing, news about their books or… their brand new, hot-of-the-press book covers!

Today, it is my enormous pleasure to welcome my loveahappyending.com friend and go-to-person for all things authorly, the fantabulous Linn B. Halton, with the cover reveal for her next bestseller, Never Alone!

Cover reveal for Never Alone
and Top Tips for keeping your man happy!

I’m doing a fab splash around some wonderful blogs and websites to celebrate a brand new shiny cover, hot off the press. This story is full of heart and a young woman, Holly Atherton, who doesn’t want to say ‘yes’ to having that wedding ring placed on her finger. Even though Will is the love of her life and absolutely gorgeous!

Never Alone is being released in January 2013 and it’s a story of true love, but as we all know the path is never easy. Keep reading to find out how you can win an advance copy to be sent out in December 2012.

Before I tell you all about Holly’s story I wanted to ask my lovely host, the fabulous and talented rock-chic author, Nicky Wells, what top tip she has for keeping a partner happy. Of course, I couldn’t ask that question if I wasn’t prepared to spill the beans myself….

Set aside ‘together’ time, whether that’s an evening out or a short-break away, as long as it’s romantic! Think of it as a date, or if you are going away together re-kindling your ‘affair’. Don’t let ife get in the way!

So, Nicky, what’s your little secret?

I’d say… Recognize the lovely inner child in your man! Thank him for helping out around the house or in the kitchen (and for God’s sake don’t let him see you go round after him doing the job properly!), and let the little temper tantrums and niggles wash right over you… Bliss.

Thank you, Nicky, duly noted (soooo true!) and added to my growing list of ‘Ways to Please Your Man’ – sounds like a new book to me! Ha! Ha!

Holly Atherton has a  seemingly perfect life, until suddenly it  all beings to unravel. She has spent her life living up to other people’s expectations of her, trying to please them.

She has it all – the affluent family who dote on her, a job she loves in her father’s business, and the perfect boyfriend. Will is a successful entrepreneur and they are about to start enjoying a lifestyle many can only dream about. His latest business deal will see them with homes in the UK and Los Angeles.

But what if you wake up one morning and find yourself wondering whether the path you are on is the one you are supposed to be taking? Is she too caught up in pleasing her parents and Will to take her future into her own hands?

When Holly’s psychic sensitivity begins to surface she doesn’t know how to handle it. Vivid dreams seem too real to ignore and she finds herself ‘talking’ to  Nick, the recently deceased brother of her best friend, Celia.

Just having someone to whom she can offload what she’s feeling helps and she feels happier moving forward with Will into their exciting new future and all seems well… the rest is coming soon!

TAKE PART!!
Thank you for helping me to celebrate this cover reveal.
Simply leave your TOP TIP for keeping your man happy and 6 names will be randomly selected from the blogs taking part to receive an advance ecopy of Never Alone in December 2012.

Festive wishes to everyone! Linn

Awesome! HUGE congratulations on a fabulous cover and I can’t wait to read the story of Holly, Nick and Will. Rock on!

Music Monday Special: The Star Child Cover Reveal PLUS Radioactive with Imagine Dragons

It’s Music Monday!

And today, I have the pleasure of bringing you a very special edition indeed! Music Monday has teamed up with Inkspell Publishing to bring you the Cover Reveal for Stephanie Keyes’ debut novel, The Star Child.  Are you ready? Drumroll and… Here It Is:

Isn’t it fantastic? Now let’s find out more about The Star Child:

The world is about to be cloaked in darkness. Only one can stop the night.

Kellen St. James has spent his entire life being overlooked as an unwanted, ordinary, slightly geeky kid. That is until a beautiful girl, one who has haunted his dreams for the past eleven years of his life, shows up spinning tales of a prophecy. Not just any old prophecy either, but one in which Kellen plays a key role.

Suddenly, Kellen finds himself on the run through a Celtic underworld of faeries and demons, angels and gods, not to mention a really ticked off pack of hellhounds, all in order to save the world from darkness. But will they make it in time?

The Star Child is due for release in e-book and paperback edition on 21st September!!!

And here’s some background on Stephanie Keyes, the author behind this book:

Stephanie Keyes was born in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania and has worked for the past twelve years as a corporate educator and curriculum designer in the Telecommunications industry. She holds a Master’s degree in Education with a specialization in Instructional Technology from Duquesne University and a B.S. in Management Information Systems from Robert Morris University. She is a classically trained clarinetist, but also plays the saxophone and sings. When she’s not writing, she is a wife to a wonderfully supportive husband and mother to two little boys whom she cites as her inspiration for all things writing. The Star Child is Mrs. Keyes’ debut novel.

Find out more about Stephanie at her website, find her on Facebook or follow her on Twitter! Stephanie is also a fellow featured author at loveahappyending.com  and you can visit her author page there.

Congratulations, Steph, on a fabulous cover and I am so excited to be part of the reveal blog hop!

Now then… this **is** a Music Monday Special and I believe you have something to share without about the musical inspiration behind your writing….?

Absolutely! Music to me is integral when I’m writing and I am writing in the middle of a huge project. It’s the second book in The Star Child series, The Fallen Stars. As hooked into this project as I am, there is one song that I go to over and over again to set the mood for writing about Kellen and Calienta’s journey. That’s Radioactive by Imagine Dragons. It’s got is all. Intense lyrics, hard bass line, and a little Celtic-style flute. There’s much more to come with those two.

In the meantime, check out this link and listen to what’s been inspiring me…

Fabulous! This is a new band for me but, having read The Star Child, I can see how the music is reflected in the mood and atmosphere…Very powerful stuff!

To celebrate the cover reveal for The Star Child, the folks over at Inkspell are offering a glorious give-away!

Check out this celtic knot designed antiqued bookmark – Will go very very well indeed  with this book!

The give-away is open to USA and UK residents: enter here… and good luck!

Wow, what a post! Cover reveal, music and give-away all rolled into one: fantabulous. What do you make of the cover, dear reader? And Steph’s music clip, for that matter? Don’t they just put you in the mood for an enchanting fantasy read?
